Is There a Christmas Market in Banff in 2026?

Yes. The Banff Christmas Market returns for 2026 on select Thursdays to Sundays from November 19 to December 13, with 16 market days across four weekends. It’s held at the Banff Train Station, about a five-minute walk from downtown, and every visitor needs a pre-booked ticket with a time slot.

The market has grown a lot since its first year. It started in 2014 with about 25 vendors and now brings in more than 200 Canadian artisans, and the line-up changes from one weekend to the next. If you come for two weekends, you won’t see the same stalls twice. That helps if you’re hunting for something specific, such as handmade Banff Christmas ornaments, local jewellery, wool goods or small-batch food gifts.

Banff Christmas Market 2026 Dates and Hours

The Banff Christmas Market dates for 2026 are November 19–22, November 27–29, December 3–6 and December 10–13. Fridays and Saturdays stay open until 9 p.m. (shopping wraps up at 8 p.m.), Sundays close at 6 p.m., and the three Thursday evenings run from 5 to 9 p.m.

Special Dates to Know

  • Twinkle Night (Thursday, November 19): the season’s sneak peek, with admission at 50% off.
  • Thursday, November 26: the market is closed. Pre-booked workshops still go ahead.
  • Community Thursdays (December 3 and 10): evening sessions with a more local, après-style feel. The indoor shopping zones are closed on these nights, so come on a Friday to Sunday if gifts are the goal.
  • Tree lighting and holiday light show: every Friday, Saturday and Sunday at dusk. In mid-December, dusk arrives well before 5 p.m., so you can catch it on a day trip and still get home at a reasonable hour.

Banff Christmas Market Tickets: Prices and Passes

Banff Christmas Market tickets must be bought online in advance, and each one is tied to an entry time slot. Single-day adult tickets range from $7.50 to $16.50 CAD, depending on the day and time. Children 2 and under get in free. Each ticket allows one entry with no re-entry, so plan your parking and food stops before you scan in.

Ticket typeAdult (11–64)Senior (65+)Youth (3–10)2 and under
Single day (timed)7.50–16.506–14.502.50–7Free
Weekend pass (one weekend, no time slot)$39.95$32.95$7Free
Season pass (all 16 days)$99$99$7Free
Family Friday Pass (2 adults + 2 youth, Fridays)$30 per family
“The More, The Merrier” (8 adult tickets + $25 food voucher, Sat or Sun)$132 per package

All ticket sales are final unless the organizer says otherwise, so confirm before you buy.

The youth tickets also go to good causes. The organizers donate all youth ticket sales to the Shine Foundation, the Banff YWCA and the Star 6 Ranch Foundation.

Our take: For a family visiting on a Friday, the $30 Family Friday Pass is the best deal on the list. If you’re spending a full weekend in Banff, the weekend pass lets you drop in at night for the lights without booking another slot.

Santa, Cookie Decorating and Workshops

These add-ons are small and sell out, so book them when you buy your entry tickets.

  • Free Santa photos: included during regular market hours.
  • A Magical Moment with Santa: Saturdays, 10–11 a.m., $149 per family (up to five people). This is a private 10-minute visit with photos, hot chocolate, cookies and a signed book. There are only five slots per Saturday.
  • Cookie decorating with Mrs. Claus: Fridays and Sundays at 4 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. in the Whoville KidZone, $20 per child, 12 spots per session.
  • Evening workshops (plus GST): holiday swag making on November 26 (75), paint night on December 3 (60), and Christmas card making on December 10 ($40).

What’s New at the Banff Christmas Market in 2026

Shoppers browse a festive wooden vendor stall at the Banff Christmas Market

The 2026 market adds an Après Ski Lounge and Raclette Bar, reusable ceramic souvenir mugs, cookie decorating with Mrs. Claus, private Santa visits, and a tree lighting and light show every weekend at dusk. Food stays hearty, with raclette, bratwurst, gourmet hot chocolate, mulled wine, and festive cocktails.

A few things are worth knowing before you go:

  • The mugs are a deposit system. You can return your mug or keep it as a souvenir. It’s a small, practical gift that packs well.
  • Pick a mid-afternoon time slot. Eat an early lunch on Banff Avenue, arrive around 2 p.m., and you’ll have time to browse before the light show at dusk.
  • Shopping is mostly local and Canadian. Bring a small foldable bag. Glass ornaments and ceramics travel better wrapped in a scarf than loose in a backpack.
  • Plan on two to three hours for a relaxed visit, or half a day with kids and a booked activity.

Getting to the Banff Christmas Market: Parking, Transit and Tours

Banff is about 130 km west of Calgary on the Trans-Canada Highway (Highway 1), roughly a 1.5-hour drive in good conditions. The market is beside the free Train Station Public Parking lot. That lot fills on market weekends, so arrive early, come by Roam Transit from Canmore, or take a guided tour and skip parking altogether.

Driving From Calgary

The Trans-Canada is well maintained and open year-round, but December driving in the mountains is a different job from city driving. Winter tires are strongly recommended. Conditions can change quickly between Canmore and the park gate, and the light fades early. Check the 511 Alberta road report before you leave.

Every vehicle that stops in Banff National Park needs a valid Parks Canada pass. In 2026, a daily pass costs $12.25 per adult, $10.75 per senior, or $24.50 per family/group vehicle, and youth are free. You can buy it at the park gate on Highway 1.

Banff Christmas Market Parking

  • Train Station Public Parking lot: about 500 stalls, free for up to nine hours, open 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. It sits right next to the market, so it’s the obvious choice, and also the first to fill. On Saturdays, aim to be there before 10 a.m.
  • Bear Street Parkade (level one) and Bow Avenue: more free short-term parking options in town.
  • Downtown paid parking: runs 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. year-round in the core, and you can pay by app. It’s handy for a quick dinner after the market, but it adds up over a full day.
  • Live updates: Parks Canada’s Banff Now page and BanffParking.ca show real-time lot availability.

From Canmore by Roam Transit

Staying in Canmore? Roam Transit Route 3 links Canmore and Banff seven days a week. A one-way adult fare is $6, seniors and youth pay $3, and children 12 and under ride free. Walk from the downtown Banff stops to the train station in about five to ten minutes.

Skip the Drive With a Guided Day Tour From Calgary

Pickup truck parked near a scenic mountain lake on a guided day tour drive

If the drive is what’s putting you off, let someone else do it. Our Banff Gondola, Hot Springs, Bow Falls and 3 Lakes day tour runs in winter, with pickups in three places:

  • Delta Hotels Calgary Downtown at 7:30 a.m.
  • Canmore Inn & Suites at 9:10 a.m.
  • Moose Hotel & Suites in Banff at 9:40 a.m.

The tour includes your National Park entry fee and a professional driver-guide, with a maximum of 14 guests. The day also includes free time in Banff town, which is the easiest way to fit the market into your day. Gondola, hot springs and market tickets are separate. Before you book a market time slot, ask our team how long the Banff town stop runs on your date. Free cancellation is available up to 24 hours before departure.

Things to Do in Banff at Christmas 2026

Christmas in Banff is far more than one market. Between mid-November and early January, the town runs a free light walk, a Christmas celebration at the top of the Banff Gondola, a hot chocolate trail at more than 20 cafés and restaurants, a holiday train concert, theatre at the Fairmont Banff Springs, and skating on Lake Louise.

In Search of Christmas Spirit (Banff Christmas Light Walk)

This free, ticketed evening walk winds through the Cascade of Time Garden. It tells a story through lights and large wildlife sculptures. It runs from 4:30 to 9:30 p.m. on Thursday to Sunday evenings from November 12, and then nightly from December 17, 2026, to January 3, 2027. Tickets for visits up to December 6 went out on November 2. Tickets for December 10 to January 3 are released on November 30 at 10 a.m., and they go quickly. If you’ve seen photos of Banff at Christmas with glowing animal sculptures under the mountains, this is usually where they were taken.

Mountaintop Christmas at the Banff Gondola

From November 21 to December 31, 2026, the summit of Sulphur Mountain hosts A Very Vintage Mountaintop Christmas. It includes Santa visits, crafts and classic holiday movies, all included with your gondola ticket. Pursuit publishes the specific Santa days and times on the gondola website, so check those before you plan your day around a visit.

Banff and Lake Louise Hot Chocolate Trail

From November 12, 2026, to February 7, 2027, participating cafés and restaurants in Banff and Lake Louise serve their own festive hot chocolate. It’s an easy way to warm up between the market and the light walk.

CPKC Holiday Train in Banff (the “Banff Christmas Train”)

The lit-up CPKC Holiday Train is scheduled to stop at the Banff train station on Tuesday, December 15, 2026, from 7:15 to 7:45 p.m., with Sam Roberts Band and Owen Riegling performing. The concert is free. Bring a cash or food donation for the local food bank, and confirm the timing on CPKC’s site closer to the date, because train schedules can shift.

Christmas at the Castle and A Christmas Carol at Banff Springs

The Fairmont Banff Springs turns into a holiday hub every December. Its Christmas at the Castle package lists stay dates from December 14, 2026, to January 5, 2027. Carter-Ryan Productions’ A Christmas Carol has played at the hotel’s theatre for several seasons, and last year it ran from December 5 to 28. The 2026 schedule hadn’t been posted when we checked, so watch the event listings if you’d like to see the Banff Springs version of A Christmas Carol. The same goes for the hotel’s Christmas brunch and dinner: book as soon as menus are released.

Banff Upper Hot Springs Over the Holidays

The hot springs reopened in spring 2026 after a long renovation. Parks Canada lists daily hours of 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. (last entry 9:30 p.m.), and the pool is open on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day. Admission is first come, first served and sold only at the front desk. A single adult entry is $19.75. Roam Route 1 runs up Sulphur Mountain from downtown, and the hot springs parking lot is small.

Ice Skating on Lake Louise

Lake Louise is about 57 km (45 minutes) from Banff. The Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise clears and lights a rink on the lake, usually from mid-December, depending on ice conditions. In most years the hotel also builds an ice castle on the lake. If skating at Lake Louise is high on your list, plan it for after mid-December and check conditions the week before. Our guide to the best things to do in Lake Louise covers the rest of the area.

What About the Banff Christmas Parade in 2026?

The Santa Claus Parade (renamed the Santa Claus Celebration of Lights) used to run on Banff Avenue in November. It was cancelled and did not return in 2025, and no 2026 date had been announced when we published this guide. Banff & Lake Louise Tourism’s Christmas events page is the place to watch for any news.

Christmas Markets Near Calgary and Across Alberta in 2026

If you’re searching for Christmas markets near Calgary in 2026, three are worth your time: the Canmore Christmas Artisans’ Market (November 21–22), the Spruce Meadows International Christmas Market (November 13 to December 6), and the Millarville Christmas Market (November 5–8 and 12–15). Only Canmore is close to Banff. The other two are on the Calgary side.

Canmore Christmas Artisans’ Market 2026

This is a small, local, handmade-only market at the Canmore Recreation Centre (1900 8th Avenue). It runs Saturday and Sunday, November 21–22, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. It usually has around 75 Bow Valley makers, and proceeds have historically supported the Canmore Preschool Society. Canmore is about 25 km from Banff, so you can pair it with the Banff market’s opening weekend.

Spruce Meadows Christmas Market 2026

Calgary’s biggest holiday market expands to four weekends in 2026: November 13–15, 20–22, 27–29 and December 4–6. Expect 325-plus vendors at 18011 Spruce Meadows Way SW, open Saturdays 10 a.m.–7 p.m. and Sundays 10 a.m.–6 p.m. New this year, Friday evenings from 6 to 9 p.m. are adults only (18+). General parking is included with admission, and pets aren’t allowed.

Millarville Christmas Market 2026

Running since 1988, Millarville brings nearly 300 vendors to the Millarville Racing and Agricultural Society grounds, south-west of Calgary in the foothills. The 2026 dates are November 5–8 and 12–15, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $8 for ages 12 and up, and free for younger kids. It wraps up before the Banff market opens, so you can’t do both on the same weekend.

Is It Snowing in Banff in December? Weather and What to Wear

Yes, Banff is reliably snowy in December. Daytime highs typically sit around −5 to −4°C, and overnight lows are often near −15°C. Fresh snow falls several days a week, and around the winter solstice you get fewer than eight hours of daylight. Cold snaps below −20°C can happen, so dress for the evening, not the afternoon.

What to wear to the market:

  • A warm insulated jacket plus a fleece or wool mid-layer. You’ll be standing still more than you think.
  • Waterproof, insulated boots with good grip. Paths around the station can be icy, and a pair of slip-on ice cleats is cheap insurance.
  • A toque, gloves (touchscreen-friendly helps) and a neck warmer or scarf.
  • Hand warmers for evening visits and the light show.

Our Canada trip travel kit list has a full packing checklist.

Christmas Day in Banff: Dinner, Hotels and Packages

Dining table decorated for the holidays at a Christmas day restaurant in Banff

Most of Banff stays open over Christmas, but book everything early. Christmas Day dinner at hotel restaurants, such as the Fairmont Banff Springs and Banff Park Lodge, and at most restaurants downtown is usually by reservation only, and the popular seatings fill weeks ahead. The hot springs are open on Christmas Day, and the ski hills run as normal.

If you’re comparing Christmas in Banff packages or a Banff Christmas vacation package, keep in mind that hotels sell the room-plus-perks bundles. Banff Trip Planner doesn’t sell lodging. What we do is pair with any stay, from a hostel to the Fairmont, and handle the sightseeing days. For a more polished trip, our luxury VIP tour checklist for Banff shows what to confirm before you book a private day.

A Simple Two-Day Banff Christmas Itinerary

Day 1 (Friday): Town and market

  • Morning: drive or ride in from Calgary and park at the train station before 11 a.m.
  • Late morning: walk Banff Avenue and the Bow River trail to Bow Falls.
  • 2 p.m.: Banff Christmas Market (Family Friday Pass if you have kids).
  • Dusk: tree lighting and light show.
  • Evening: dinner downtown, then your In Search of Christmas Spirit time slot (4:30–9:30 p.m. window).

Day 2 (Saturday): Mountains and soak

  • Morning: Banff Gondola for Mountaintop Christmas.
  • Afternoon: Banff Upper Hot Springs, then a Hot Chocolate Trail stop or two.
  • Late December option: swap the afternoon for skating on Lake Louise.

Prefer not to drive between stops? A private tour from Calgary, Canmore or Banff can follow this plan at your pace, with hotel pickup and a flexible start time.

Our honest view: If you have winter tires and mountain driving experience, driving yourself is fine. If either of those makes you hesitate, a tour takes the dark, snowy drive home off your plate, and the park pass is already covered.

Local Tips and Mistakes to Avoid

  • Don’t turn up without a ticket. Entry is by timed ticket, and popular Saturday slots go first.
  • Don’t plan the light walk “on the night”. In Search of Christmas Spirit tickets are released in batches and the December dates go fast. Set a reminder for November 30 at 10 a.m.
  • Don’t confuse the Thursdays. November 26 is closed, and the indoor shopping zones are closed on December 3 and 10.
  • Do bring a card and a little cash. Cash is handy for small purchases and for food bank donations at the Holiday Train.
  • Do give wildlife space. Elk often wander near the train station and through town in winter. Stay at least 30 m back, and never get between a cow and her calf.
  • Do leave buffer time to drive home. Even a light snowfall can stretch the 90-minute drive to Calgary, especially after dark.

Banff Christmas Market 2026 FAQs

Is there a Christmas market in Banff?

Yes. The Banff Christmas Market runs on select Thursdays to Sundays from November 19 to December 13, 2026, at the Banff Train Station, 327 Railway Avenue. It brings together more than 200 Canadian artisans, festive food, Santa and a weekend light show. Timed tickets must be bought online in advance.

When is the Banff Christmas Market 2026?

The Banff Christmas Market 2026 is open November 19–22, November 27–29, December 3–6 and December 10–13. Thursday evenings run 5–9 p.m. (November 19, December 3 and December 10 only), Fridays 11 a.m.–9 p.m., Saturdays 10 a.m.–9 p.m. and Sundays 10 a.m.–6 p.m. It’s closed on November 26.

Do I need tickets for the Banff Christmas Market?

Yes. Every visitor needs a ticket booked online with a time slot, and each ticket allows one entry with no re-entry. Single-day adult tickets cost $7.50 to $16.50 CAD, youth (3–10) are $2.50 to $7, and children 2 and under are free. Weekend and season passes skip the time slot.

Where do you park for the Banff Christmas Market?

Use the Train Station Public Parking lot next to the market. It has about 500 free stalls with a nine-hour limit and is open 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. It fills on market weekends, so arrive before 10 a.m. on Saturdays, or use the Bear Street Parkade, Roam Transit or a guided tour from Calgary.

Can you visit the Banff Christmas Market as a day trip from Calgary?

Yes. Banff is about 130 km from Calgary, roughly 1.5 hours by car on the Trans-Canada Highway in good conditions. Book a market time slot in the early afternoon so you have time to park and still drive home before late evening. A guided day tour with free time in Banff town avoids winter driving altogether.

Where to go for Christmas markets in 2026?

In Alberta, the standouts for 2026 are the Banff Christmas Market (November 19 – December 13), the Spruce Meadows International Christmas Market in Calgary (November 13 – December 6), the Canmore Christmas Artisans’ Market (November 21–22) and the Millarville Christmas Market (November 5–8 and 12–15). Banff and Canmore pair best on one trip.

Is Christmas a good time to visit Banff?

Yes, if you enjoy snow and festive events. December brings the Christmas market, a free light walk, Mountaintop Christmas at the Banff Gondola, ski season and skating on Lake Louise from mid-December. The trade-offs are cold evenings, short daylight and higher hotel prices over Christmas week, so book accommodation and Christmas dinner early.

What to do in Banff in December 2026?

Highlights for December 2026 include the Banff Christmas Market (until December 13), In Search of Christmas Spirit, Mountaintop Christmas at the Banff Gondola, the Hot Chocolate Trail and the CPKC Holiday Train on December 15. You can also ski at Norquay, Sunshine or Lake Louise, soak in the Upper Hot Springs, and skate on Lake Louise once the rink opens.

Is it snowing in Banff in December?

Usually, yes. December is one of Banff’s coldest and snowiest months. Daytime highs typically sit around −5 to −4°C, overnight lows are often near −15°C, and fresh snow falls several days a week. Expect snow-covered streets and mountains for most of the month, and pack insulated boots, a toque and warm layers.

What is the cheapest month to go to Banff?

Hotel prices in Banff are usually lowest in the shoulder seasons, especially November and April to May, with January after New Year’s often cheaper too. That makes the November weekends of the Banff Christmas Market good value. Christmas week and summer are the most expensive times to stay.

How long should I spend at the Banff Christmas Market?

Plan on two to three hours for shopping, food and the festive displays. With kids, a Santa visit or a workshop, allow half a day. To see the tree lighting and light show, choose a Friday to Sunday time slot that runs into dusk, which is late afternoon in December.

Conclusion

The Banff Christmas Market 2026 is the season’s centrepiece, but the best trips pair it with a light walk, a gondola ride, and a soak in the hot springs. Book your market time slot early, plan around the short December days, and if mountain driving isn’t your thing, browse our Banff tours from Calgary and let us handle the road.

We hope to see you in the mountains this Christmas. Happy holidays from all of us at Banff Trip Planner.
