What You’ll See

Start your day with a peaceful sunrise at Vermilion Lakes, just 5 minutes from Banff, where calm waters reflect Mount Rundle beautifully—especially in September with golden fall colours.

A short drive brings you to the Fenland Trailhead for a 2-km forest walk along Echo Creek. This quiet 45-minute loop passes wetlands with chances to see deer or beavers.

Next, visit Cave and Basin National Historic Site. Explore its restored 1914 bathhouse, learn about the origins of Canada’s national parks, and follow the boardwalk to warm mineral springs and the emerald basin.

Continue to Lake Minnewanka, a turquoise lake surrounded by rugged peaks. Walk the scenic lakeshore trail to Stewart Canyon (1-hour round trip) and enjoy dramatic mountain views.

Visit Bow Falls, where the Bow River cascades over wide rapids, followed by a stop at Surprise Corner Viewpoint for iconic photos of the Fairmont Banff Springs framed by Sulphur Mountain.

Drive 25 minutes to Johnston Canyon. Walk the 2.4-km round trip to Lower Falls, following a catwalk over a limestone gorge with misty waterfall views.

Then head toward the Upper Hot Springs parking area and hike the 1-km trail to the Sulphur Mountain Cosmic Ray Station. Enjoy sweeping 360° mountain views before sunset. Optionally relax at Banff Upper Hot Springs afterward.

Visit Two Jack Lake for a quiet lakeside walk and picturesque evening reflections of Mount Rundle.

Return to Banff for an evening stroll along Banff Avenue and Cascade Gardens, then finish at the Mount Norquay Lookout—an amazing spot for stargazing.
